Anatomic whole-body phantom (FTS-06T phantom)

This unique phantom is intended for calibration of radiation counters for measuring 90Sr activity in a human body on the basis of bremsstrahlung, and for calibration of beta-radiometers at measuring 90Sr activity in the frontal bone on the basis of beta radiation.

The whole-body phantom is made as an anatomic model of a body of an 18- or 20-year-old man with the height of 170 cm and mass of 69 kg. The phantom consists of eight sectional parts with mutual fixation in the positions lying (standing) and contains models of the skeleton, lungs and frontal bone.

A model of the skeleton with the mass of 9.3 kg is represented by a complete set of anatomic models of skeleton bones produced from bone-equivalent composition based on epoxy resin (Patent of the Russian Federation No. 2097836 of 19.07.95). The skeleton model contains calibrated activity of 90Sr homogeneously distributed in the material of the bone tissue.

A model of lungs 1.0 kg in mass consists of anatomic models of the right and left lungs made of tissue-equivalent plastic with density of 0.26 g/cm3.

A model of the frontal bone is designed as an anatomic model of a human frontal bone and consists of the frontal bone proper with mass of 0.11 kg, integumentary forehead tissue and internal tissues of the skull. The model of the frontal bone contains calibrated activity of 90Sr homogeneously distributed in the bone tissue.

The rest of the tissues are represented by homogeneous tissue-equivalent mass supplementing the phantom to the volume of the whole human body. All phantom materials are equivalent to main biologic human tissues as to attenuation of photonic (bremsstrahlung) and beta radiation of 90Sr. The parameters of radiation attenuation correspond to the data of international documents ICRU Report 44 (1989) and ICRP Report 70 (1995). The phantom is certified as a State Standard Sample of the Russian Federation.
